concept

In the film The Five Obstructions, Lars von Trier

had Jørgen Leth do five remakes of his own film The Perfect Human as a means of helping him overcome his aesthetic perfection and find his "true self".

Each of Leth’s five retakes was constrained by the rules set by Trier. This film gives the impulse for our work. Within the setup of a wide screen and two performers we enacted our own quest for the aesthetics and the meanings of film. In response to Trier’s film we asked a Theater Director, a Choreographer and an Actor to give us movie titles and obstructions for the treatment of film and the performers. We chose sequences from their given material, sampled them using their obstructions and staged an episode for each of them. The entire performance begins with a documentary video of the instructors and is followed by these 3 Episodes.
